Landmarks in the History of Pizza Hut

The history of Pizza Hut began in 1958, when two brothers, Frank and Dan Carney, opened the first pizzeria in Wichita, Kansas, where both of them lived. They borrowed six hundred dollars from the mother and started business in a rented building with a partner.

The following more than fifty years of the company’s development were full of important events.

1958 – The first Pizza Hut location is launched in Wichita, Kansas.
1959 – Additional restaurants are opened including the 1st franchise location in Topeka, Kansas.
Early 1960s – The Pizza Hut chain grows on due to aggressive marketing politics.
1962 – Frank and Dan Carney buy out their partner’s interest.
1966 – The Pizza Hut franchise chain includes 145 units.
1968 – The 1st Pizza Hut location starts working in Canada.
1968 – IPHFHA, the international association of Pizza Hut franchise holders, is founded.
1970 – The Pizza Hut chain opens locations in Germany and Australia. The same year the 500th restaurant is launched in Nashville, Tennessee.
1971 - Pizza Hut becomes the largest pizza chain in the world, according to the number of units and sales.
1972 - Pizza Hut enters the New York Stock Exchange and offers its shares to the public.
1972 – The company acquires Taco Kid, Flaming Steer, and Next Door.
1973 - Pizza Hut opens its restaurants in Great Britain and Japan.
1973 – The 2,000th Pizza Hut location is started in Independence, Missouri.
1977 – PepsiCo buys up the company. Pizza Hut becomes a division of the global conglomerate and the new head-office is built in Wichita.

1984 – Steven Reinemund is appointed chief executive officer and president of the company.

1990 – The 1st Pizza Hut location accepts clients in Moscow.
1991 - Pizza Hut has restaurants in eighty countries of the world.
1992 - Pizza Hut funds the national program “Book It!”, involving over seventeen million American students.
1994 – The company suffers the first decline in profits in fifteen years.
1999 - Pizza Hut owns more than 400 restaurants.

2005 – The 4forAll is launched.
