Landmarks in the History of Huntington Bank
- 1866 – P. W. Huntington founds The Huntington National Bank in Columbus, Ohio.
- 1878 – P. W. Huntington builds a five-story office building for his bank.
- 1890s – The early 1900s – Five Huntington’s sons become his partners and executive managers.
- 1918 – P. W. Huntington dies and F. R. Huntington becomes the bank’s president.
- 1905 – The Huntington National Bank is incorporated and named The Huntington National Bank of Columbus.
- 1923 - Huntington Bank acquires Hayden Clinton Bank and State Savings Bank.
- 1928 – F. R. Huntington dies and Theodore Huntington, his brother, assumes the presidency.
- 1928 – 1929 – the bank pursues the low-risk strategy during the Great Depression that helpes it to survive the difficult period.
- 1933 – B. G. Huntington, the youngest brother, becomes the president of Huntington Bank.
- 1949 – B. G. Huntington cedes the presidency and takes the position of chairman of the board. He is succeeded by John Stevenson, the first leader of the bank who is not a member of the Huntington family.
- The early 1960s - Huntington National Bank purchases many banks and turns them into Huntington locations. It also builds a number of new branches and starts providing new services, such as retail lending and mortgage loans.
- 1963 – Clair Fultz assumes the presidency.
- 1960s - Huntington National is separated into 8 main departments. It operates 15 Huntington locations in Columbus and uses computer systems.
- 1966 - Huntington National Bank celebrates its 100th anniversary and launches the international banking division dealing with foreign companies and banks.
- 1966 - Huntington establishes Huntington Bancshares Incorporated, the parent company of Huntington National Bank.
- 1972 - Huntington National is the 1st American bank operating a twenty-four-hour automated banking office. It is named the “Handy Bank”.
- 1975 – Arthur Herrman becomes the president of the bank.
- 1976 – Huntington Mortgage Company is formed.
- 1977 – Huntington Leasing Company is founded.
- 1979 - Huntington Bancshares owns assets of about .5 billion and has 97 Huntington locations.
- 1981 – Frank Wobst takes the presidency.
- 1982 - Huntington Bank is the 4th largest Ohio bank holding company, with 176 offices and assets of billion.
- 1982 – The bank acquires Union Commerce for two billion dollars.
- 1980s - Huntington maintains safe strategy.
- 1989 - Huntington Bancshares Incorporated has almost 250 Huntington locations in eleven states and about billion in assets.
- The early 1990s - Huntington Bank opens an operation center, located in West Virginia. It consolidates the bank’s account management operations.
- 2007 – Huntington Bancshares acquires Sky Financial Group Incorporated, located in Bowling Green, Ohio.
